Wood Pellet Stoves

This type of stove uses pellets as its heating fuel.  All pellets are biomass materials, that is, products of commonly grown plants and trees. The most common residential pellets are made from sawdust and ground wood chips, which are waste materials from trees used to make furniture, lumber, and other products.

Resins and binders (lignin) occurring naturally in the sawdust hold wood pellets together, so they usually contain no additives. An auger feeds the pellets (that look like rabbit food) into a small burn chamber, a handful at a time, and a blower fan adds air for combustion.  Another fan distributes the heat through the room.

A pellet stove (or its cousin, the corn burning stove) needs only  a simple exhaust outlet through an outside wall, similar to what is used for a clothes dryer. A pellet stove provides a steady, even heat. The fuel is cleaner and much easier to handle than firewood   A filled hopper can provide heat for one to two days.  Some models have a 140 lb. capacity (The "WEST POINT" crafted by Hudson River Stove Works)  and burn time can be several days

Pellets take about one third as much space as a cord of wood.

The Cape Cod Stove Company is proud to carry these fine brands
Thelin Co. Inc. is the only company in the world that manufactures state of the art Wood, Pellet and Gas stoves with an old time "Parlour, Pot Belly" look.   These hand-crafted heaters are meticulously made to the highest quality standards, and surpass all EPA clean air standards.

All Pellet heaters are equipped with Automatic Electronic Ignition as standard equipment. Both Pellet Stove models are also equipped with Battery Back-up circuitry which means that with the purchase of a twelve volt battery, the pellet stove will switch to back up power automatically when the power fails.

The gas stoves can be built for either natural gas or liquid propane and all stoves, gas and pellet, can be operated with awall thermostat for convenience and conservation of fuel.

Advantages of Wood Pellets
  • Reduces our dependence on oil and gas. Pellet fuel cost is not dictated by world events; therefore cost is more affordable and predictable.

  • Since pellet stove emissions are so low they can be burned in most areas even those with burning restrictions. Pellet fuel has been proven to provide the cleanest burn of any solid fuel.

  • Only minimal clearance is needed for appliance installation. Because of the near total combustion (around 98.5%) pellet stoves produce virtually no creosote. This also allows installation of a pellet stove by direct vent... without a chimney!

  • Wood pellets are a sustainable source of fuel. Reduces waste destined for landfills and the cost of disposing waste is greatly reduced.

  • One ton of wood pellets has the heat value of about one and a half cords of wood and stacks easily in one third the space! This makes it possible to easily store fuel for the entire season.

  • A 40-pound bag of Wood Pellets produces only 3 ounces of ash. An Environmentally Superior source of heat, CO2 Neutral both in combustion and storage.

Wood pellets are a clean, environmentally friendly, natural, renewable fuel resource.

What will I like about heating with pellets?

Experienced pellet burners reap rewards for shopping and planning carefully and learning to operate and maintain their pellet heating system. The fuel itself is easily and cleanly stored and handled in bags.  Pellet stoves also provide a special comfort associated with wood burning. The combination of fans delivering warm air currents and the direct comfort of radiant heat provides special satisfaction on a cold winter day.

Pellet stoves burn very cleanly and offer the lowest emissions of unwanted pollutants in solid fuel burning appliances. Burning biomass pellets offers convenient heat delivered with environmental concern.

How do pellet stoves work?

Pellet appliances automate as many functions as possible. The most significant is fuel delivery. The heat setting made by the operator controls an auger or similar feed device that delivers regulated amounts of fuel from the hopper to the fire. Automatic fuel delivery from the hopper frees the user from frequent attention and loading, while providing clean burns and the desired comfort level.

The amount of air needed for optimum combustion efficiency is delivered automatically or with minor manual adjustments. In most designs, a fan delivers air to the fire and blows exhaust by-products out of a vent pipe that is smaller and typically less expensive than a chimney (Figure 3). In most designs, a fan delivers heat to the home by blowing air through heat exchangers in the stove and out into the home. Heating efficiency is greatly enhanced by removing the heat from the appliance before it can exit the system.
